As you know, my journey started with my Dad, whose passion for sewing was ignited during his school days when he would spend time at a friend’s tailoring shop. He was so interested that he’d remove stitches just to see how a shirt was made, and then put it all back together! He even learned to sew shirts, but was never taught to cut dresses as the tailor kept that skill a secret. That is a mistake that we should not make when passing on a skill.
My dad eventually went on to get his Tailoring Diploma after he moved to Chennai, and brought a Usha Brown table pedal machine into our home, followed by a Merritt sewing machine. My brother and I would play on those machines, pretending we were riding bikes, often breaking the needles! This brings me to my first, and perhaps most important, DO NOT:
Never run the machine without fabric or paper! If you do, the needle can break, potentially causing injury, and can also damage the foot of the machine
If you must run the machine without fabric, lift up the foot. This will save needles and also protect you from potential injuries.
My dad’s early passion for sewing really shaped my life. Today I am a founder of an Online Sewing Academy and a sewing coach. If you love something, and try as much as you can, one day you can master it. So you should always share your full skill when teaching someone else, they may become the best in the field
